My favorite things to do in Bangkok

バンコクの街は観光・買物・食事・エステ・マッサージ････。楽しみにしていることがたくさんあります。滞在時間が限られている客室乗務員はいつも時間をやりくりして上手に（？）気分転換をしています。今日は私のお勧めのバンコクをご紹介しましょう。

9年前のバンコク市内の主な移動手段はバス・タクシー・トゥクトゥクでした。当時はモノレール（スカイトレイン（BTS））や地下鉄（MRT）の工事があちらこちらでおこなわれていて、バンコクに行くたびに、あのスピードで工事を進めていたらいつ完成するのだろう？と気を揉んでいましたが、瞬く間に完成してしまいました。それと共に、次々に高層ビルが建設され、近代都市に変貌するバンコクの街に驚かされます。このスカイトレインと地下鉄が開通したおかげで、不名誉にも世界的に知られているバンコクの交通渋滞に巻き込まれることもなく、買物・エステ・マッサージなどをいくつもこなし、有意義なステイを過ごしています。

バンコクでのショッピングと言えば、私のお気に入りはジム・トンプソンのシルク製品で、スリウォン通りの本店ではオーダーメイドの服を作ることができます。形によって値段や日数が異なりますが、簡単な服なら仮縫いを含め2～3日で作れるので、バンコクの滞在が４～5日あるなら、1日目にオーダーすると帰国前に受け取ることができます。また、店内にあるカフェではランチタイム・ティータイムも楽しめ、くつろいだひとときを過ごすのもいいでしょう。

このジム・トンプソンにはアウトレットショップもあります。最新のデザインのものはありませんが、通常の値段より30～50%ＯＦＦで買えるので、気に入ったものがあればかなりお得です。場所はスカイトレインのON NUT（オン　ヌット）駅から徒歩15分ですが、炎天下を歩いて目的地にたどり着くには、しっかりとした方向感覚と多少の根性がないと不可能かもしれません。（駅を降りてから見つけることができずに諦めた人もいます）ホテルのドアマンからタクシーのドライバーに説明してもらって行く事をお勧めします。
このアウトレットのある建物にはこれといった特徴がなく看板も目立たないので、タクシーを降りると、「ここでよかったのかしら」と心もとなくなります。デパートやホテルのアーケードにあるようなお店のイメージとは多少ギャップがありますが、1階の生地売り場を通り抜け、店内奥にあるエレベーターや階段で3 階・4階に行けば、ポーチ・バッグ・ネクタイ・スカーフ・ランチョンマット・クッション・などの小物製品があります。いくらお手ごろの値段とは言え、荷物が山のようにならないよう、買いすぎにご注意ください。

【ジム・トンプソンって？】
OSS（現CIA）の諜報機関要員として、第二次世界大戦末期にタイを訪れる。そのまま住みつき、戦後はシルクの事業を始め世界中にタイシルクを広め功績を残す。1967年に休暇でマレーシアを訪れたまま、謎の失踪を遂げ行方不明に。いまだにこの謎は未解決。ジム・トンプソンの家は博物館になっている。

My favorite things to do in Bangkok
There are a lot of things to do in Bangkok; sightseeing, shopping, dining, going to a beauty clinic, and getting traditional Thai massage. Our stay in Bangkok is relatively short, yet we always try to make it enjoyable. In this July issue of JALways' Crew Magazine, I would like to tell readers of this column my favorite things to do in Bangkok.

Nine years ago. The most common forms of transportation in Bangkok were bus, taxi and tuk-tuk. At that time, the construction of BTS, Bangkok Sky Train, and MRT, Bangkok Metro, had been under way at many sites of the city. Although the works seemed to proceed at a slow pace, they were completed much earlier than I had imagined. Skyscraper construction has also been booming over the past couple of years, and Bangkok has transformed itself into one of the largest modern cities in the world. Thanks to BTS and MRT, Bangkok's notorious traffic jam has been eased. By using public transportation wisely, I visit a lot from one place to another within a short period of time, and enjoy shopping, beauty clinic and traditional massage.

As for the shopping in Bangkok, my favorite is Jim Thompson that boasts high quality of Thai silk products. The main shop, located along the Surawong road, offers not only ready-made products but also custom-tailored silk clothing in a variety of styles. The time to finish the order and the price of the finished product vary depending on the styles. Generally, orders take only two or three days after the fitting. If you are planning to stay for 4 or 5 days in Bangkok, you should make an order on the first day of your stay so that you would be able to get the product before leaving the city. There is a cozy cafe in the main shop that serves fine food and drinks. It is a really lovely place to have lunch or a cup of coffee when you want to feel refreshed.

Jim Thompson also has an outlet. It sells discounted Thai silk products and fabrics at about half the price of the main stores. It is worth checking out although the products of newest designs are not available. To get there, take BTS to the terminal On Nut. It is about fifteen-minute walk from the terminal, so you must have a good sense of direction and a will to find your way to the destination in the hot sunshine. I know some colleagues who got lost and were not able to find the store. It's useful to get your hotel doorman to say the address of the outlet in Thai to the taxi driver.

The outlet has no big signs, and its look is not like the other Jim Thompson stores, so visitors may wonder if it is the right place. The building's first floor mainly sells fabrics. Go up to the third and forth floors by using an elevator at the rear of the store. Those floors are filled with ready-made items such as pouches, tote bags, ties, scarves, luncheon mats, and cushions. They are really good value. Please be careful not to buy too much goods.

【Who is Jim Thompson?】
Jim Thompson was a former intelligence officer of the Office of Strategic Services (later CIA). He visited Thailand in the last days of World War II on a mission of OSS. After the war, he did not return to his country, and settled in Thailand. He started up silk business there, and made a great success in spreading the use of Thai silk to many nations of the world. He mysteriously disappeared in 1967 during vacation in Malaysia, and this mystery remains unsolved. The house he used to live is currently a museum named Jim Thompson's House.
